Our Unique Approach to TMJ Disorders

Dr. Motlagh does not simply address jaw pain and the other symptoms of TMD. She treats the fundamental causes of the condition to achieve more dramatic and lasting results. Her healing team consists of physical therapists, chiropractors, orthodontists, myofunctional therapists, and even ear, nose, and throat (ENT) experts. Treatment may include a combination of techniques from multiple specialists. Thanks to her detail-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to care, Dr. Motlagh is often able to treat even severe TMD without the need for surgery.

Accurate Diagnosis is Crucial

Before recommending appropriate TMD treatment, Dr. Motlagh will evaluate symptoms such as headaches, popping of the joint, and grinding to trace their causes. She will begin with a computerized jaw analysis to evaluate muscle activity. With an EMG test, she can assess electrical activity and nerve signals in your jaw muscles to reveal muscle spasms, nerve damage, and other related concerns. Dr. Motlagh may refer you for CT scans with a specialist across the street from our office. A certified radiologist will read the images, looking for joint damage and tissue inflammation. A sonogram can also be very effective in determining what may be causing your discomfort.

Along with state-of-the-art tests, Dr. Motlagh will also perform diagnostics to discover possible external causes of TMD. She will evaluate your posture, perform a strength test, and analyze other lifestyle factors. Then she will use all the combined data to begin designing your treatment plan.

By determining the precise causes of TMJ disorders we can ensure long-lasting results.

What to Expect from Treatment

At Aesthetic Smiles℠ , the main focus of TMD treatment is to restore balance to your jaw without the need for surgery. By bringing your head, neck, and jaw into proper alignment, Dr. Motlagh can reduce pressure on jaw joints and muscles. She can also eliminate facial pain, headaches, and other symptoms. During the first three months of treatment, Dr. Motlagh will reprogram your jaw muscles and reset your oral health foundation. This process could involve physical therapy to improve posture. You might also undergo ultra-low frequency TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) to deprogram muscles that have been prone to spasms.

Treatment for TMD is a commitment, and results are not achievable overnight. Oftentimes, throughout the initial three months, you will wear a removable or a semi-permanent bonded oral splint at all times, except when eating or brushing. The device will reposition your jaw so that it naturally rests in the healthiest alignment. After healing with the appliance during the initial trial phase, we may recommend orthodontics to correct bite misalignment. Dr. Motlagh may also recommend dental restorations to rebuild teeth that have been worn from clenching and grinding. If you have severe or widespread damage, a full mouth reconstruction may be appropriate.

After repositioning your jaw, and restoring damaged teeth, Dr. Motlagh will fabricate your custom dental retainer or mouthguard. You will typically only wear this device while you sleep to prevent your jaw from moving back to an unhealthy position. Dr. Motlagh takes great care when fitting oral appliances, and she will test your device multiple times to make sure that your bite is properly aligned.

Dr. Motlagh firmly believes in patient education, and she will keep you completely informed throughout your treatment. She uses easy-to-understand audiovisual materials to explain jaw function and the causes of TMJ disorders. Often, this education can help you follow your treatment more closely, and achieve lasting results.
