Temporal Headaches: A Systemic Health Concern
TMJ disorders, otherwise known as TMD, are often caused by a misalignment of the jaw, which can lead to pain and a variety of other symptoms. One possible cause may be your overall posture. As you try to counteract poor posture, you may angle your head and jaw for balance, placing pressure on both jaw joints and muscles. Incorrect swallowing, ill-fitting dental restorations, and difficulty breathing or mouth breathing (whether from allergies or another condition) can also cause jaw misalignment. Because you may push your neck forward, and tilt your head in an attempt to open your airways, the lower jaw, which is slung by muscles, can be forced away from the ideal rest position, resulting in misalignment. As your joints and jaw muscles are strained, the muscles can become inflamed, and the TMJ disk can be displaced, causing joint noise or limited jaw movement. Ongoing strain can lead to muscle spasms and tension throughout facial muscles, resulting in chronic and severe temporal headaches.
Diagnosing TMJ Disorder and Headaches
Dr. Motlagh strives to effectively diagnose the cause of pain for those suffering from chronic temporal headaches. With a comprehensive diagnosis, she can provide effective care with lasting results. Dr. Motlagh uses many advanced diagnostic tools including:
- Computerized jaw analysis
- Electromyography (EMG) tests
- Computerized tomagraphy (CT) scans
- Sonogram technology
She will also perform a physical exam, evaluate your posture, and examine your overall symptoms. Once she understands the cause of your temporal headaches, she will begin to design your individualized treatment plan.

Effective Treatment to Ease Chronic Headaches
Dr. Motlagh works with a full team of specialists to treat TMD-related headaches. Together, they will focus on the underlying cause of your condition, rather than treat the symptoms alone. Each treatment regimen is different because Dr. Motlagh and her team will work to restore the proper balance of your jaw. The first stage of your care will typically take about three months. During this time, Dr. Motlagh will reprogram your facial muscles to reduce tension and correct jaw alignment. She may recommend Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to deprogram muscles that have been strained and spasming. She may also refer you to a physical therapist or a chiropractor to improve posture and jaw function, relieving built-up tension. A custom-made orthotic will be made for you during this phase to keep the jaw in the comfortable position, heal the jaw joints, and eliminate muscle inflammation.
The majority of patients do not want to depend on an appliance long term. Once the correct position of the jaw has been tested with the orthotic appliance, Dr. Motlagh may recommend orthodontia or restorative treatments as phase two (corrective phase), to establish a comfortable bite for you permanently.
