Why Correct a Tongue-tie In Kids And Adults?

By Maryam Motlagh D.M.D on March 10, 2016

Why correct a tongue-tie in kids & adults?

1) Effect of tongue-tie on Facial Development

The correct position of the tongue in the mouth plays a major role in development of the mid face, giving you more attractive children.  In mouth breathers the tongue stays in the floor of the mouth instead of being in the roof of the mouth where it belongs so the air can enter the body through the mouth.  When the tongue is not in the roof of the mouth at rest the force from the cheeks and facial muscles is not balanced by the tongue and therefore the upper jaw narrows causing tooth crowding and under develpoed mid face.

2)  Effect of tongue-tie on Breast Feeding

The tongue is the only muscle that helps babies latch on to mothers' nipples to squeeze the milk out for their survival. Many babies loose the advantage of getting nutrients  from mother's milk due to tight tongue or lips that often are missed in diagnosis.  The improper use of the breast can cause lower milk supply making the mother feel she is not producing enough whe in fact it's because of a restricted freedom on baby.

3)   Effect of the tongue on swallowing, speech and breathing

The position of the tongue in the mouth plays a major role in swallowing, speech and breathing correctly.  When the tongue rests on the floor of the mouth in mouth breathers, it puts pressure on the lower teeth and interferes with their eruption.  kids with tongue-tie usually have speech abnormalities because they can't freely move the tongue in the right place for phonetics.

4)   Oral Hygiene

The tongue effectively  removes the bulk of the food from the sides of your teeth after each meal.  People with tongue-tie usually show cavities on the buccal surface of upper back teeth because their tongue can't reach that far for sweeping the food from that area.

5)  Stress Reducer

The latest research has shown that incorrect position of your tongue is linked to high Cortisol levels in the body.  When the tongue is positioned in the palate it stimulates certain branches of  Trigeminal nerve which reduces Cortisol levels in the body.  That is why babies find thumb -sucking calming. A tongue-tie can also contribute to tension in the upper neck and shoulder.
